Warren Alberts

Warren Alberts joined the Waukesha Aviation Club at the age of 16 and launched a career that led him to the vice-presidency of United Airlines. After graduating from UW-Madison as a mechanical engineer, Alberts bought his first airplane in 1938. During World War II, Warren Alberts joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served overseas for three years piloting B-24 bombers, rising to the rank of colonel. Following the war, three nations decorated Alberts for his heroism with the following awards: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (U.S.A.); Order of the British Empire (Great Britain) and the Croix de Guerre with palm (France). After the war, Alberts joined United Airlines and developed various aspects of flight simulators. In addition, he introduced operations research concepts, including computer simulation of airline operations, and assisted in development of real time computer systems. He retired as vice president of the company in 1980. In 1981 he received a Distinguished Service Award from the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
