Paul began competing in gymnastics at the age of seven for the Swiss Turners Gymnastics Club. At thirteen he earned a position on the U.S. Junior Gymnastics Team. Paul finished eleventh and third in the All-Around at the 1999 and 2000 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. After qualifying for the 2000 U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Olympic Trials, Paul finished first in the Pommel Horse and second in the All-Around events and was named to the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics team. While representing the U.S. on the Men’s Gymnastic team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Paul finished fourteenth in the All-Around.
